DescriptionCarefully crafted and full of mystery, these drawings were made during the artist Nick Miller's weekly visits to Patrick Hall's Sligo studio. They shared working practice developed during the Covid pandemic and resulted in a rich body of work for both artists. Miller, who painted the older artist at work over extended periods, observes that Hall ‘paints from a place of emptiness and some sense of boundless void that most traditions tell us is the ultimate truth at the heart of existence’. Hall uses a bamboo pen to make the initial lines of the composition and works in colour washes with a brush. These strange landscapes infused with rich colour revisit imagery that Hall has explored in his large-scale paintings. The presence of a large grey stone is significant as it is a subject he returns to repeatedly, for example in his painting ‘Seastone’ (Dublin City Gallery: The Hugh Lane).
