Patrick Hall
Patrick Hall studied at the Central School of Art in London where he was influenced by Cecil Collins’s work, notable for its spiritualism and allegory. Following two decades based in London and Spain, Hall returned to Ireland in 1974 and began exhibiting with the Independent Artist’s Group, which also included painters Brian Maguire and Patrick Graham. This group of artists were at the forefront of the so-called ‘return to painting’ of the 1970s and 1980s. Hall’s enigmatic and philosophical paintings and drawings are underpinned by biblical references. His work explores the psyche and the imagination and conveys profound ideas about mortality. He has been an influential figure for younger artists such as William McKeown, Nick Miller and Isabel Nolan. Hall has exhibited widely both in Ireland and internationally and his works are included in public collections including the Arts Council, Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane and IMMA. He has been a member of Aosdána since 1982.
