Charles Oakley1925-2008

Oakley attended Queen’s University, Belfast (1943-44) and then the Slade School of Fine Art (1948-52). He attended the British School in Florence for a brief period in 1950, and the following year worn the Wilson Steer Medal. Having taught in Cumberland for some time, he served as senior lecturer in painting at Ulster College of Art and Design (1962-74), and was then appointed to the staff of University upon Tyne Polytechnic. He was awarded first prize in the Singer & Friedlander/Sunday Times Watercolour Competition in 1999. He exhibited in London, Manchester, Carlisle, Dublin and Belfast, and is represented in the public collections including Carlisle Art Galleries, and Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
