Lutz Dille was a highly accomplished photographer who contributed greatly to Canadian photography in the sixties and seventies. Born in Leipzig, Germany, he first learned photography from his father. During the war, he served as a reconnaissance photographer, taking panoramic photographs from hot air balloons for the German general staff. He immigrated to Canada in 1951. Dille was a regular photographer for the NFB Still Photography Division. In 1967, the Division produced the exhibition The Many Worlds of Lutz Dille, whose catalogue was the first of the Division’s Image series. As well, Dille created experimental and social documentary films, in addition to working freelance for television.
