John Kindness
Born in Belfast. Undistinguished school career. Studied Fine Art at the College of Art in Belfast; took 10 years to recover from the experience. Involved in underground comics and television graphics. Started making art full-time in 1986. Influential year in New York - PS1 fellowship - 1989-90. Moved to Dublin 1990 - began working on public commissions. Moved to Tullow, Co. Carlow in 1996. Projects included: Belfast Frescoes, The Museum of the Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly and Bigfish. Sargent Fellowship: British School at Rome 2001. Currently living in London alternating personal projects with commissioned work. Public collections include: Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; British Council; Imperial War Museum, London, Ulster Museum, Belfast; National Gallery of Ireland; Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane; Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
