Eithne Carr1946-2014

Eithne Carr was born in Dublin in 1946. Carr studied at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) and graduated in 1983 with a BA in Fine Art Painting. While a student, she received the Director’s Award for Painting 1982. She was a member of the New Art Studios, North Frederick Street, Dublin during the 1980s. Carr was a lecturer at NCAD and worked as a teacher for the college’s Fine Art Programme at Portlaoise Prison. Carr was elected as an associate member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1991 and a constituent member in 1996. She served on the Executive Committee of the Association of Artists in Ireland (AAI). She died in 2014.

Carr’s work has been exhibited at the Tom Caldwell Gallery, Dublin and Belfast (1987 and 1991); the Hallward Gallery, Dublin (1995, 1999); and the Ashford Gallery, Dublin (2003). She regularly participated in the major group exhibitions including Oireachtas; the Irish Exhibition of Living Art, Iontas and the RHA annual exhibitions. Carr’s work is held by private collections in Ireland, England, and the USA, and public collections in Ireland including The Arts Council of Ireland / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and the Office of Public Works (OPW).

Carr painted landscapes, still life, foliage and flowers and is particularly noted for her work as a colourist. Her landscapes cover ground from North County Mayo to Crete and New Mexico. The exotic environments of warmer climates inspired the use of vibrant colour and energetic, semi-abstract compositions.
