Hughie O'Donoghueb.1953

Hughie O’Donoghue was born in Manchester to an Irish mother and a father brought up in Co. Kerry, and spent much of his childhood in Ireland. He has retained a strong bond with and deep affection for the west of Ireland ever since, and now divides his time and practice between London and Mayo. The Irish landscape, and its social history, has informed much of O’Donoghue’s work. He studied art at Goldsmith’s College, and upon graduation, was appointed artist-in-residence at the National Gallery, London. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 2009, and is represented in collections throughout the world, from Trinity College, Dublin and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, to Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Art Gallery of South Australia. In 2013, O’Donoghue was commissioned to design windows for the Henry VII, Lady Chapel at Westminster Cathedral. Night Cargo, a major exhibition of new work by Hughie O’Donoghue, was one of the main events at the Galway International Arts Festival 2020.
