DescriptionCatterson Smith Jr. painted regularly in Scotland and exhibited both Scottish and Irish landscapes regularly at the Royal Hibernian Academy. Here he captures Bla Bheinn (or Blaven to give it its Anglicised name), near Loch Slapin, one of the isolated peaks of the black Cuillin on the Isle of Skye. Its unique position means the climb to the summit is rewarded with an amazing view of the stark, jagged summits of the main ridge, one of the most awe-inspiring mountain vistas. The walk is strenuous, involves a little scrambling and careful navigation but is within the capabilities of experienced and well-equipped hillwalkers. The artist has chosen to depict the expansive mountain vista from a distance.
