DescriptionFor many years, this print was believed to be the work of O’Conor’s close friend, the French artist Armand Seguin. The etching was reattributed in 1989 by Roy Johnston thanks to the discovery of a proof in the plate signed by O’Conor (Indianapolis Museum of Art, ex-collection Josefwitz).

The rhythmic lines of the composition are characteristic of O’Conor’s prints and paintings of time. These flowing lines bring together the various elements of the composition while careful plate wiping creates tonal variation on the sheet. The print represents a good example of O’Conor’s expressive etching style influenced by Seguin. Stylistically, parallels can also be drawn with Van Gogh’s drawings.
