Label TextThis mirror, the pendant to the other displayed nearby, features even more daring carving. Joseph Leeson, 1st Earl of Milltown, commissioned these fashionable Rococo pieces for his dining room at Russborough House. His equally magnificent sets of Rococo silver, by Dublin and London makers, would have created glistening reflections in the mirrors by candlelight. The original glass is exceptionally well preserved. Some of the motifs derive from the published designs of London furniture makers Thomas Chippendale and Matthias Lock. However, the exuberant design and heavy application of gold leaf points to an Irish maker.
