DescriptionMany of Turner's sketches made on his 1836 trip to Switzerland were executed from viewpoints accessible solely by foot. Burnt umber and earthy ochre are contrasted, to great effect, against distant pale blues and greys. By modelling form directly in paint without the aid of pencil lines, Turner captures the terrain's atmosphere, depth and expanse.
