Exhibition HistorySeen, not Heard, The Crawford Art Gallery, Cork, 28 June-28 October 2019Label TextSlaughter was an English portrait painter. During the 1730s and 1740s he spent time working in Ireland where he received commissions from wealthy patrons. The identities of the woman and child in this painting are unknown. It is most likely that they are mother and daughter. Although the portrait is a formal one, Slaughter conveys intimacy and affection between the sitters through the positioning of the child’s hands.
