Label TextThis colourful altarpiece depicts the Christ Child enthroned on his mother’s lap, while cherubs, bathed in golden light, fill the sky around them. Beneath this divine scene, three saints kneel in adoration. Saint Clare is the only figure who can be accurately identified. She is shown in the centre, holding her attribute: the sacred host of the Eucharist in a monstrance. The Venetian painter Palma worked in Rome under the patronage of the Duke of Urbino, before returning to Venice. He became the leading artist in that city after Tintoretto’s death in 1594.
