Label TextKillary Harbour in Connemara marks the border between counties Galway and Mayo. An eight-mile long fjord-like inlet, it is flanked by mountains, including Mweelrea, Connacht’s highest, visible on the left of Watkins’s painting, and Bengorm, identifiable on the right. The harbour remains one of Ireland’s most celebrated beauty spots. Watkins captures its splendour in meticulous detail, but also records the harbour as a working place, including fishermen who set out to join those in the distance already harvesting the waters’ rich stock of herring.
