DescriptionThe small, deep lake at Gougane Barra is the source of the River Lee. Petrie creates a romantic scene by depicting the oratory of St Finbarr silhouetted by a shaft of light. In the nineteenth century when the Penal Laws prohibited the public celebration of Catholic services the faithful travelled for miles to hear Mass in the isolated church.
