Label TextThe dimensions and composition of this painting suggest that it was a companion piece to the depiction of Saint Dominic hanging to left of the doorway. The poses of the saints and the visible underside of the arches indicate that Saint Dominic was originally meant to be on the left side and Saint Francis on the right. The saints appear to look up at an object or person, suggesting that they originally flanked another painting or sculpture. Given the identity of the saints, the two paintings probably hung in a Franciscan or Dominican church in the southern Netherlands.
