Label TextYsenbrandt was one of the most important painters in Bruges during the first half of the sixteenth century. He probably trained with the more renowned Gerard David, whose compositions he often repeated. This painting of the Virgin and Child resting on their flight into Egypt is a variation of a composition by David, now at the National Gallery of Art, Washington. Ysenbrandt zoomed in on the central figure group, changed the landscape, omitted Joseph and stripped the scene of several anecdotal details. Ysenbrandt’s version also has warmer colours and a softer handling of paint than David’s painting.
