Label TextYeats cleverly contrasts the brightness and bustle of the street outside with the shadowed interior of a shop. The fashionably dressed woman, deep in conversation, drops a coin into the outstretched hand of the old man without looking at him. It seems that we, as viewers, are inside the shop too, watching the scene. This painting is similar in style and composition to other paintings that Yeats produced in 1924, in particular ‘The Railway Bar’. It shows his interest in recording the everyday happenings of country towns.
