Label TextMullins was a key figure in Dublin art circles in the late eighteenth century and contributed greatly to the development of landscape painting in Ireland. His wife ran a tavern in Dublin, at which several important young artists lodged. Among them was Thomas Roberts, who served as Mullins’s apprentice. An admirer of the work of Claude Lorrain, Mullins incorporated classical or literary themes into several landscapes. The unconventional upright format of this painting echoes a quartet of landscapes that Mullins produced in 1768 for the Earl of Charlemont, the artist’s principle patron.
