Label TextThis picture is contemporaneous with epic historical paintings by Maclise, including The Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife, and though tiny by comparision, features the same careful attention to detail. Maclise revelled in describing historical settings. Here he imagines the great French classical landscape painter Claude, who had settled in Italy by 1626, sketching in the Campagna in the company of an admirer. Maclise, who had gone on similar drawing expeditions in his youth in Cork, also depicted scenes from the life of Salvator Rosa.
