Label TextThe horse, owned by Wyndham Quin of Adare, is set against the Curragh race course, with the round tower of Kildare Cathedral visible in the distance. Quin commissioned a set of five paintings of his favourite horses for his home. Dublin based Daniel Quigley was the key Irish sporting artist of the period. He worked in the style of British artist James Seymour, although his equestrian portraits are somewhat cruder. Quigley often used a number of compositional formulas, one of which is seen here, with the horse shown in profile and the jockey standing holding the reins.
