Cork and, in 1733, he was elected Recorder of the City of Dublin (chief magistrate). His relatively relaxed and casual pose in this portrait reveals his confidence, while his clothes reveal his status and wealth. Latham was the leading portrait painter in Ireland at this time, and it is likely that this portrait was commissioned to mark Stannard’s appointment as Recorder.
