He won great renown painting sets for the Dublin theatres, but also produced a significant number of easel paintings. His technical competence is evident in this ideal rustic scene, particularly in the deftly realised figures and carefully calculated balance of the composition. The order and tranquil quality of the painting recall the Arcadian landscapes of the seventeenth-century French artist Claude Lorrain.
