Label TextTuohy trained at the Metropolitan School of Art under William Orpen, who considered him one of his most gifted students and exercised a profound influence on his art. The subject of this portrait was the daughter of the artist Beatrice Elvery and her husband Gordon Campbell (later Lady and Lord Glenavy). The portrait was painted at the Campbells’ family home in Kimmage when Biddy was twelve or thirteen. Tuohy sketched in the feet but left them unfinished as the young girl had tired of the many sittings required and had refused to provide more.
