DescriptionJeurat was a French painter best known for his small genre scenes depicting figures engaged in everyday activities. This red chalk drawing shows a woman praying, with her rosary beads hanging over the edge of the table. It is a preparatory study for a painting entitled La Dévote (the devout woman), which was engraved in 1734. The inscription indicates that the drawing once formed part of the teaching collection at the Dublin Society's Drawing School. Drawings were marked prominently in this way to prevent theft.Exhibition HistoryVon Poussin bis Monet. Die Farben Frankreichs, Bucerius Kunst Forum, Hamburg, 10 October 2015 - 17 January 2016
