DescriptionAndrew Nicholl’s depiction of rushing water recalls the flurry of rapid, foamy currents that photography was later able to capture. Although created in the nineteenth century, Nicholl’s vantage point, composition and interpretation of the landscape have a modern sensibility. The sound of a fast-flowing river is evoked through the hasty application of watercolour. Mill buildings in the background provide reminders of human activity in this seemingly secluded setting.
