DescriptionIn this sheet, the final stage, white highlights were added to give life to the rushing water, and the foliage was delineated with realistic detail. The artist used two brushes, one old and worn for achieving foreground 'accidents' and washy effects, the other for detail. His usual palette consisted of twelve colours: vermilion, Indian red, Prussian blue, brown madder, pink madder, sepia, gamboge, yellow ochre, Vandyke brown, olive green, cobalt and emerald green. In his sketches he often left the sky untouched, using the ivory tinted Creswick paper as a background.
