DescriptionThroughout Angelica Kauffman’s productive career as a history and portrait painter, she painted many self-portraits. By way of these self-referential images, she explored her identity as an artist and shaped her contemporary reputation. Though she was reluctant to produce prints of her own image, engravings of her were widely distributed by professional printmakers, such as William Ridley. This creates an interesting conundrum as although this print portrays Kauffman in her role as an artist, it was undoubtedly an ‘unauthorised’ self-portrait print.(Katie Buckley, Curatorial Fellow - Prints and Drawings, An Artist's Presence, 2025, Print Gallery)
