Label TextAfter the death of Constable’s wife in 1828, the artist and his children spent three weeks the following summer with his friend Archdeacon Fisher, who lived close to Salisbury Cathedral. This oil sketch was made looking from the artist's bedroom window across the water meadows towards the village of West Harnham. Constable recorded, in minute detail, the tower of the church and mill, set against the gentle slope of Harnham Ridge. Swathes of grey clouds take up most of the composition.
