Label TextAccording to legend, three beautiful women appeared to Fra Lorenzo di Grotteria in the Dominican church at Soriano in Italy in 1530. They presented to him a portrait of Saint Dominic. Later, a revelation to another friar identified them as the Virgin, Saint Catherine and Mary Magdalen, all of whom were protectresses of the Dominican Order. The subject became popular in the Dominican churches of seventeenth-century Spain. Jusepe Leonardo was a Spanish painter who worked on a number of major commissions for King Philips IV, among them the Royal Alcazar of Madrid.
