Label TextA courtesan wearing pearl earrings and a precious necklace has fallen asleep. She leans on a large drum, which is covered with more jewellery, coins and a gold goblet, all of which are part of a military booty behind her. A soldier seems to be selecting more jewellery for her. A second woman, probably a procuress, observes him from the corner. She, in turn, is being approached from behind by another soldier. Duck was one of the most important Dutch painters of genre scenes during the first half of the seventeenth century. He painted mostly brothel and military guardrooms scenes.
