DescriptionThis is an example of a mezzotint printed from a very badly worn plate. The texture of the plate has been flattened which means that it cannot hold much ink resulting in a pale washed out print. Parts of the print which should be a rich, dark black are instead light grey and detail and texture has been almost completely lost. Certain areas have been clumsily reworked, particularly in the face and the left sleeve and collar. Nearly all Miller's prints are of very great rarity which probably explains why this print was bought by the Gallery at the sale of Chaloner Smith's collection in 1887.
