DescriptionDrapery studies, executed from Renaissance times, acted as a training exercise in which the artist learnt how to model sculptural forms in two dimensions. By projecting the knee forward artists could better analyse the drapery in space and render the complex forms of the folds in light and shade. The sheet of exquisite drapery studies by Primaticcio (NGI 2239) was gifted to the Gallery by Burton in 1866.
