DescriptionThis modello or compositional study relates to a painting of c.1650 now in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg. Although this is a small drawing, Jordaens, a Flemish artist, manages to convey the deep distress of the figures who have just taken Christ’s body down from the cross. The dramatic attitudes express great sorrow and disbelief, while the awkward pose of Christ’s body is clearly that of a corpse.Inscriptionlower centre (in ink): Jordaens
