DescriptionBassano ran a renowned studio in the town of Bassano del Grappa in the north of Italy. He made use of direct observational drawings for his paintings and frescos. Engravings were also critical in forming his style, particularly prints after Titian and Giulio Romano. Bassano's mature work includes pastoral biblical scenes notable for their naturalistic foreground figures. The figure peering over a parapet is almost certainly a study from life.
