DescriptionIn the seventeenth century Bologna was one of the most important centres of art. Its artists were particularly renowned for life-drawing. Red chalk was the preferred medium for studies of the human form because of its malleability and softness. The collector's mark of John Bouverie (c.1723-1750) can be seen on the lower left of the sheet.
