DescriptionThis portrait of Etienne Dumonstier II (1540-1603) was recently identified as the work of the sitter's brother, Pierre Dumonstier I. Along with three drawings in the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, it relates to a planned double-portrait of the two brothers, though no such painting is now known. It is a good example of the intimate chalk portraits popular at the French court in the 16th century. Several members of the Dumonstier family worked as portraitists and their keenly-observed depictions were much admired.
