Label TextRiding a donkey, Christ enters Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Garments and palm leaves are laid as a carpet before him. He looks back to his disciples, adding a poignant note, as it is the beginning of the sequence of events that led to his Crucifixion. At this date Moscow superseded Novgorod as the leading Russian city. In the monumental scale of the figures against the landscape background, and their pale colours, this panel shows the influence of the great Icon painter Dionysius (c.1450 1502), who moved from Novgorod to Moscow.
