DescriptionThis is the only known instance of Healy designing for opus sectile, a technique similar to
stained glass, in which sections of glazed ceramic
tile slot together to form a pictorial scheme.
Against a vivid blue ground, Healy captured a
cross-section of London society. The bustling
figures may have been inspired by the many
informal sketches the artist made of his fellow
Dubliners. Healy’s design was commissioned
to commemorate Emma Cons – suffragist and
founder of the Old Vic Theatre – but was
never executed
