DescriptionOver his lifetime, Houbraken, a Dutch engraver based in Amsterdam, produced some 800 prints, mostly portraits. He was commissioned to engrave a large series of portraits for the London publishers John and Paul Knapton. These publishers employed draughtsmen to copy paintings in private collections throughout England. This print is copied after a 1685 painting by Kneller. Another artist was employed to design the decorative 'frames'. These drawings were sent to Houbraken who carefully engraved the whole.
