Label TextMulcahy, who worked extensively for local landed families, painted this view of Curragh Chase shortly after the addition of a long front to the existing eighteenth-century house. The estate, originally called Curragh, had been in the hands of the Hunt/de Vere family since the Cromwellian plantations, and was the home of the poets Sir Aubrey de Vere and his more celebrated son and namesake. Landscape gardening, Aubrey junior recalled, was ‘one mode of taking out the poetry which was so deeply seated’ within his father.
