Label TextAn old, impoverished couple are enjoying a meal in the company of their dog. They are seated in a modest interior with a cupboard, chimney and box bed. A bed warmer, used to heat up the bed before sleeping, can be seen hanging on the far right. De Pape was a painter from Leiden, who probably trained with Gerrit Dou, in whose style he worked for most of his life. The painting is strongly indebted to Dou’s images of elderly people. Although De Pape’s artistic achievements remained limited, he was a wealthy man, who frequently lent money to Rembrandt’s siblings.
