DescriptionThe Browne family seat, Westport House, houses the oil painting by Opie, an important London based portrait painter, after which this print was made. Arthur Young, in A Tour in Ireland reported that Browne was a great improver who laid out the town of Westport with wide tree-lined streets and elegant houses. He also introduced linen manufacturing to the town. Until the Famine, Westport was a prosperous town with a small port at the quay and markets for agricultural produce and linen.
