DescriptionThe monotype, after a painting made in 2002, depicts the artist’s daughter viewing the eighteenth century artist George Barret's painting of Powerscourt Waterfall, which is part of the Gallery’s collection. Barret’s painting reflects Edmund Burke's writings on the sublime and the idea that aspects of nature, including ferocity and scale that can evoke fear, astonishment and wonder. This print, one of three monotypes, was made in Black Church Print Studio with the assistance of Mary Fitzgerald, master printer. The image reflects the artist’s painting technique at the time – marking in the basic lines of the composition using a black wash, then working lighter pigments like Burnt Sienna over the entire canvas. This process was reflected in the monotypes, which was created from 3 different coloured inks.
