DescriptionDaro Montag’s creative practice has addressed environmental and ecological issues for over thirty years. He is particularly interested in the inherent creativity of the organic world. He actively includes soil, plants and other living organisms in his art. He has buried colour film in the soil, which he later digs up and develops using the ilfochrome (also known as cibachrome) print process. K5 was created using this process he first devised in 1993. He uses the term ‘bioglyph’ for this method of making images. Essentially it is process by which micro-organisms are encouraged to leave a trace of their activities on colour film. They are direct records of micro-biological activity.

This image is part of a portfolio of 30 photographs published by Zelda Cheatle in 2003 to celebrate 15 years of exhibitions in her London gallery. The artists included in this collection reflect Cheatle’s aim to highlight the work of important twentieth century photographers while at the same time exhibiting and supporting emerging artists. The photographs range from digital prints to silver gelatin prints and cyanotypes.
