DescriptionThe photography of Mari Mahr addresses memory and often incorporates objects she has inherited and cherished. This photograph is part of a series titled ‘Daughter of an Architect’ that charts the artist’s response to her Bauhaus-educated father’s expectation that she would become an architect. Mahr that: ‘Although I could never live up to his expectations and become an architect myself, with his professional instruments … I have at last made this tribute to him. When I was I child, these instruments were on his table - always to be respected and not to be touched. So this is an homage, albeit with a measure of rebellion on my part!’ (Artist’s website). Mahr created these archival pigment prints using a digital camera. This image is part of a portfolio of 30 photographs published by Zelda Cheatle in 2003 to celebrate 15 years of exhibitions in her London gallery. The artists included in this collection reflect Cheatle’s aim to highlight the work of important twentieth century photographers while at the same time exhibiting and supporting emerging artists. The photographs range from digital prints to silver gelatin prints and cyanotypes.
