DescriptionRembrandt picked up etching landscape scenes in the 1640s, and again in the 1650s. This fine work depicts a cottage shrouded in trees, and with an adjoining hay barn. Three figures and a dog are pictured along the river’s edge, while two other characters busy themselves inside the cottage. As the eyes become accustomed to the busy lines, further details in the landscape come to the fore. While the scene is rendered in a highly naturalistic way, the composition came from Rembrandt’s imagination, derived from drawings made in the countryside around Amsterdam and developed in the studio.InscriptionOn verso: Rembrandt/B 224 on large paper/Workshop proof, where the upper plate edge/is prevented by turning/the tension of the press/mentioned in Seizlitz, Rovinski and Hollstein/coll.
