DescriptionThis print incorporates many of the elements characteristic of Patrick Graham’s work including text, familiar objects and a self-portrait, all rendered in his distinctive raw, scratchy drawing style. The word deposition has a number of meanings. In art history it refers to representations of Christ’s body being taken down from the cross. In law, it refers to the giving of sworn evidence while in politics it describes the downfall of a leader. Any of these meanings could be used to explain the image, but Graham’s work does not allow for easy interpretation. The artist has said that he is working ‘there is just a flow of words […] here is so much going on in my head I have to stop things and it’s the word that stops it.’ It is the sense of multiple meanings and mystery that gives this print, created in collaboration with Stoney Road Press, its depth and timeless quality.ProvenancePurchased, 2022
