DescriptionThis cartoon was for a sample panel in stained
glass, likely conceived by Child in order to
demonstrate his proficiency in the Arts and
Crafts style of his mentor, Christopher Whall.
The latter’s influence is apparent in the natureinspired framework of leafy branches, a recurrent
motif in Child’s oeuvre. Whall would instruct his
students to make observational sketches of oak
leaves, ivy and honeysuckle to create organic yet
symmetrical canopies
