DescriptionBarcroft Park, 1989 depicts a residential estate in Newry in which a masked man, who Hillen recalls as being a volunteer for the IRA, can be seen in the distance walking past a white wall, which bears a chilling warning in graffiti: “Stay away from Brits & RUC in uniform. The lives of collaborators cannot be guaranteed”. This photograph was made on one of Hillen’s multiples trips to his birthplace of Newry from London where he was based for much of the 1980s. This work very much foretells the intense, and often violent, atmosphere Hillen was working in when he returned to Northern Ireland in 1992 to make his last photo-collages of the Troubles.ProvenancePurchased, Sean Hillen, courtesy of Clair by Kahn, 2021
